In the recent past, the demand for Distance education has increased enormously throughout the country because the formal education could not accommodate the ever increasing demand for education.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

In keeping with the Union Government of India, Education Ministry’s policy to involve NGOs actively in ‘Education for all’, CoCAP has taken up initiative of establishing Community Education Centres.

Community Education Centres are a modern development in the field of Life Long Learning.

Objectives of Community Education Centres

  • To equip every learner with such productive occupational skill
  • To take distance education to the doorsteps of the learners and enhance social equality.

RECOGNITION to AIIED’s Academic Programmes through Community Education Centres

  • ISO 9001 Certification: AIIED is awarded ISO 9001 accreditation after audit of the standard of quality in all the activities.
  • Quality Policy: AIIED shall ensure improving its Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Distance Education Forum for Management Studies and Research (DEFMSR): The Distance Education Forum for Management Studies and Research (DEFMSR) strives to promote teaching and research in the Distance Learning System in the emerging areas of Management , Business and Administration. It has recognized the services of AIIED.
  • Association of Teacher Education Academics (ATEA): AIIED is granted Grade “A” and Life- time Institutional Alliance with Association of Teacher Education Academics (ATEA).
  • Association of Nursing Academics (ANA): The Academic Programmes of AIIED are approved by Association of Nursing Academics (ANA).

RECOGNITION, CONSTITUTIONALITY AND RELIABILITY

UGC is conducting Special Assistance Programmes (SAP) in the field of Continuing Education. In it’s guidelines, the Education, Government of India says:

  • Distance Education is becoming more and more significant for continuing education and skill updation to the Learners residing at educationally disadvantageous locations and for in-service personnel.
  • In case of further academic pursuits it is upto the concerned Institute/Institution to recognise the Degree/Diploma obtained through Institutes of Distance Learning.
  • In case of private employment, it is the prerogative of concerned employer to take a view on the recognition.”

The criteria for Central Government as an employer is clear in Gazette Notification No.44 dated March 1, 1995. Similarly, Government of India laid empahasis on Open Universities and Distance Education through New Education Policy (University Grants Commission) to students. As per the provisions of National policy on Education, “Life-long education is a cherished goal of the educational process. This presupposes universal literacy. Opportunities will be provided to youth, housewives, professionals, agricultural and industrial workers to continue education of their choice, at the pace suited to them. The future thrust will be in the direction of open and distance learning.”

In its' Guidelines for Open Distance Learning System (ODL System)…consisting of Educational Institutes offering Distance Education Courses , The Ministry of Education , Government of India says- “ ODL is becoming more and more significant for continuing education , skill updation of in - service personnel and for Quality Education to learners .” Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sen Gupta of Hyderabad High Court observed that “Distance Education is the best remedy for ills like Capitation fees that are afflicting the country’s education sector. Distance education is the correct medicine for setting at naught the evil designs of unscrupulous commercial elements that have crept into our education sector. Capitation and other commercial elements have hijacked our education sector and made education inaccessible to the people” ( 18th April 2015, Page 4 of Deccan Chronicle News paper).

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CAPACITY BUILDING AND ACCREDITATION ON GENDER SENSITIVITY IN SCHOOLS (IICBAGS)

IICBAGS provides Accreditation for observing Gender Sensitivity in Schools as part of Community education program and Social Action. It is a joint certification program by various organisations connected with Education and Gender Sensitivity.

Gender: It refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.

Gender equality: Equal treatment of men and women in laws and policies, and equal access to resources and services within families, communities and the society at large.

Gender Sensitiveness: The ability to recognise gender issues. It is the way forward to gender awareness and a move towards Gender Responsiveness resulting in designing of appropriate mechanisms for addressing or correcting inequalities between girls and boys/women and men in a school or company or college. For example a school can decide to give extra lessons in Physics and Mathematics as to improve Girl’s performance.

Gender Practices for Promoting Gender Sensitivity:

In several books and textbooks girls and women are depicted as fairies, as silly, as timid and cowardly. Teachers while dealing with such content should handle this negative/passive attributes carefully so that no wrong message goes.

Effective pictures and illustrations should be shown as to the children to portray that a woman is not merely a mother but can also be an engineer, a diplomat, a teacher, an administrator, a doctor, a professor, a politician, a social reformer or a social worker, a captain of a ship, a pilot of a plane, a freedom fighter, a wild life enthusiast etc,.

Women in Society and Education (WISE)

WISE provides the right platform for the women to show case their technical skills and leadership qualities. WISE strives to- . Recognise women’s outstanding achievements through Awards nominations. WISE has launched the project “ PROGRESS — PROmote GendeR Equality in Society & Surroundings.”

Questionnaire:

1. School infrastructure and utilities

  • Does the school design and infrastructure offer equal comfort level to both the genders?
  • Does the school provide sanitary assistance facilities in the event of any specific needs?
  • Does the school have special restroom facilities for female staff?
  • Is there a mechanism in the school for continuous supervision, surveying and reporting of gender specific requirements?
  • Does the school provide adequate sports facilities to meet the requirement of both genders?

2. School Administration

  • Is there bias reflected towards either of the gender in the school policies?
  • Does the verbal and written communication to the parents reflects any gender bias?
  • Is all documentation procedure of the school same for students of both genders?

3. Pedagogical practices

  • Are there any guidelines shared with teachers with regard to gender sensitive approach in the classroom?
  • Does the teacher take note of gender sensitivity in the use of language?
  • Do the teaching aids inclusive charts; visuals or e-materials indicate any bias to a specific gender?
  • Are the physical education teachers adequately oriented towards the methodologies to be adopted for instruction to different genders?
  • Are students of both genders given adequate support to participate in classroom interactions?

4. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

  • Is there a fair and sensitive approach towards selection of school leaders/prefects, house captains and other student designates?
  • Are both genders given equal opportunities in representing the school in various programs?
  • Is there any specific bias towards selection of candidates for school programs and events?
  • Are both genders given equal status and role in performances in schools?

5. School uniform

  • Is the design of school uniform sensitive to the need and comfort of both the genders?

6. School transport

  • Does the school transport system have in place measures to ensure the safety of children in terms of Gender Biased Violence?
  • Are the guidelines provided in the CBSE Affiliation Byelaws regarding school transport followed?

7. School support mechanisms (clinic/infirmary/counselling services)

  • Does the school clinic have a qualified nurse in place?
  • Does the school have a qualified counsellor to meet the counselling/guidance needs of children?
